Did you know?
Canada Steamship Lines has worked in partnership with WWF-Canada (World Wildlife Fund) on a North Atlantic whale recovery project. North Atlantic right whales are among the most endangered of the large mammal species on the planet, with a population size of only 400 whales remaining. Our collaboration with WWF-Canada aims to reduce the number of whales becoming entangled in fishing gear.

Sustainable Development Strategy

Sustainable development is a growth model that helps to ensure social equity and economic progress while preserving resources and ecosystems. It is like a three-legged stool where all activities aim at achieving a balance between the economic, social and environmental legs of the growth process. As a leader in the marine transportation industry and a corporate leader in environmental business practices, CSL measures its success first and foremost by this model.

Economy: Profits
Since 1845, CSL and its affiliates have been part of the lifeblood of countless industries, providing transportation of critical dry bulk products such as iron ore, coal, grain and gypsum. Throughout the years, CSL has consistently fulfilled the needs of its clients by providing the supply lines necessary to ensure the survival and prosperity of many industry sectors. Today, CSL is considered a visionary pioneer in its field and a commendable success story.

Innovation has always been embraced and CSL’s signature achievement, the self-unloader, is a ship that uses on-board technology to discharge cargo independent of shore-based equipment. This technology has literally revolutionized the shipping industry worldwide.

Environment: Planet
At CSL, protecting the environment is a prime corporate objective. The company is committed to responsible environmental management practices and stewardships in all aspects of its operations and corporate activities.

Equity: People

Employees
Our business strategy has, at its core, the principle that our employees are the most important assets we have. The high caliber of men and women working for us around the world are a key factor in our outstanding reputation for business integrity. At all times, CSL will endeavor to:

  • respect human rights, to provide fair and competitive employment terms;
  • promote equal opportunity employment;
  • treat employees fairly;
  • comply with applicable laws and regulations;
  • provide a clean, healthy and safe work environment in line with leading industry practices.

Being customer-focused has always been an essential part of CSL’s success. We strive to find sound shipping solutions that are individually suited to the needs of our clients, whether on the Great Lakes, in the Canadian Arctic, or anywhere around the world. We are continually working to enhance the quality of our relationship to the client, primarily by increasing the efficiency of our operations. It is our longstanding policy to deal fairly, openly and honestly with our customers and never compromise the quality of our services, our high operational standards and the most environmentally sound management policies possible.
